Service Technician
Your main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance regimes, as determined by contract terms, on a portfolio of lift and escalator equipment. Key responsibilities include completing Schindler safety inspections, closing any open non-conformities to current legislation or standards, and overseeing improvements to equipment condition to increase the time between technical call-backs and reduce lift equipment downtime. The role also involves minor repair work and lifecycle replacement of components. Adherence to all company safety and conduct procedures is essential, as is providing coverage via an ‘on call’ rota for out-of-hours calls, maintenance, and repairs.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carrying out routine servicing of lift and escalator equipment, including minor repairs and routine replacement of components, in accordance with approved company procedures (PPE, PDA, Expert+, etc.).
- Rectifying and reducing faults on lift and escalator equipment in cases of breakdown, and confirming correct functioning after repairs.
- Performing maintenance checks on lift and escalator functions, including speed, motor start/stop, weight, noise, temperature, and power supplies, using approved company-issued tools and protective equipment.
- Conducting routine inspection and adjustment of lift and escalator equipment in line with approved procedures.
- Reinstating lift and escalator equipment and completing service documentation.
- Carrying out advanced fault finding and diagnostic procedures using a range of techniques, technical manuals, and appropriate test equipment to restore equipment to service. Competence in using written or graphical information is required.
- Conducting site surveys and attending all relevant training sessions to keep up to date with technical knowledge and skills.
- Working in accordance with the company’s safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with current UK legal requirements and Schindler Group safety standards, while setting a personal example of safe behaviour.
- Contributing to company safety objectives by maintaining and monitoring current safety systems under your direct control and implementing agreed changes (where applicable) to the safety management system.
What you bring
- Experience in lift and/or escalator servicing, maintenance, or repairs (preferred)
- Qualified to NVQ Level 3 minimum in lift/escalator maintenance or equivalent
- Advanced electrical and mechanical knowledge, including multi-brand equipment
- Advanced fault finding and diagnostic skills
- Strong problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain operational efficiencies
- Ability to work independently with a flexible approach
- Good communication skills at all levels (clients, service leaders, inspectors)
- Manual dexterity – requires use of hands, arms, and feet for repetitive lifting; operation of various hand and power tools; and recording written information
- Good administration skills and punctuality
- Full UK driving licence
